Red allotted top weight in National

Definitly Red & Andy

Definitly Red has been handed top weight of 11st 10lb in the £1million Randox Health Grand National and a rating of 165. However, the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup next month is his primary target, all being well, and a decision regarding his participation in the National again this year will not be made until after then.

Red was impressive, to say the least, in the BetBright Trial Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham last month, beating American by eight lengths. He was following up an equally impressive performance in the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree in December. And in both races, his jumping was awesome and he travelled well. His defeat in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on his reappearance was solely down to the ground and Danny looked after him when it became apparent third place was the best he was going to achieve.

He is improving all the time and has come out of his Cheltenham win in great form. He has never missed a beat and looks as well as he has ever looked. Just four more weeks to keep him right! And he couldn’t be in better hands with Andy riding him out every day and Ally keeping a watchful eye on him down in his field shelter stable.

Red was one of the leading contenders in the Grand National last year but had to be pulled up after being badly hampered at Becher's on the first circuit. Danny did an amazing job to keep the partnership in tact, let a lone pull him up with his saddle under his belly!

Brian said: "He's rated 167 now so we sort of expected he'd get top weight, although it's been compressed a bit here. The Gold Cup is the plan. We'll get that out of the way and then see what happens.

"After last year I'm not sure how I feel about it. He was off a mark of 149 then and should've had a hell of a chance, but one fell in front of him and he had to climb over the top of him.

"He's improved a lot this year. He's in great form at home. I couldn't be happier with him."

The Grand National takes place at 5.15pm on Saturday, April 14th this year with a maximum field of 40 runners once again.
