Flat Jockey

Ben Robinson

Ben is our stable jockey and has been part of the team since October 2014!

Taking out his Apprentice license in February 2016, he notched up his 50th career success aboard Baraweez at Chester, a little over two years later. And on July 30th, 2019 Ben partnered his 95th career winner subsequently riding out his claim. A massive achievement in a short time.

Ben played a huge role in The Mackem Bullet’s success, which included a close-up second, in a thrilling photo-finish to the Group 2, Lowther Stakes at York in 2018 and he flew out to the USA to ride her in her track work leading up to the Breeders Cup later that year. More recently Ben added the Northumberland Plate to his CV, alas not for Brian, in 2021.

He rides out daily for us and remains a key cog in the Spring Cottage Stables wheel.

Ben rides at 8st 9lbs and his agent is Simon Dodds. Ben also holds a Jumps License allowing him to ride in National Hunt Flat races.

Flat Jockey

Harry Russell

Harry joined Brian Ellison Racing in September 2019 and has been a valuable member of the team throughout his apprenticeship, in the yard in the mornings and in the afternoons on track.

Reducing his claim from 5lbs to 3lbs in July 2021, Harry partnered his 95th winner on August 5th 2023 subsequently riding out his claim.

Harry worked for Malcolm Jefferson, sadly no longer with us, for two years and had three rides over hurdles during the 2016/17 National Hunt season before moving to Bryan Smarts yard where he took out his Apprentice License in 2017.

Since losing his claim Harry comes in to ride out one or two mornings a week.

Harry rides at 8st 7lbs and Wilson Renwick is his agent. (updated Sept 2023)

Jockeys

Choosing The Most Suitable Jockey

Stable jockey Ben Robinson rides the majority of our Flat horses with Harry Russell and Cam Hardie also riding for us.

During the National Hunt season Brian Hughes, Henry Brooke, Sean Quinlan and Nathan Moscrop ride the majority of our jumpers and will be in to school during the winter months.

Matt Brown and Kayleigh Rayner have their Amateur riders permits and both work full time for us.

However, our policy generally is to use the best jockey available who’s riding style most suits our horse on the day. Some owners also have their own jockey preferences and we always try to accommodate when possible.

Choosing The Most Suitable Jockey

The 2021/22 National Hunt season came to a close on April 23rd, 2022 and we ended the season on 21 winners with Brian Hughes, Henry Brooke, Sean Quinlan and Nathan Moscrop partnering the majority of our jumpers.

The 2022/23 National Hunt season is already underway and we have a handful of jumpers to continue running during the summer while we turn our attention to the Flat Turf season which is in full swing now. Our Flat team includes 18 two-year-olds this season. Three having run already there are a good few more either ready to run or not far off and they look a nice bunch on the whole.

Stable jockey, Ben Robinson, will ride the majority of our Flat team again this season in addition to our 3lb claimer, Harry Russell and Cam Hardie (pictured) who comes in once a week to ride work.

As a rule our policy generally is to use the best jockey available who’s riding style most suits our horse on the day. Some owners also have their own jockey preferences and we always try to accommodate when possible. (Last updated May 2022)
