Ryan Batty & David Riley

Ryan (right) started shoeing for us in 2006. He completed a four-year apprenticeship with Londonderry Forge of North Yorkshire and also achieved a diploma in the Worshipful Company of Farriers at Moreton Morrell College, Warwickshire.

Following his apprenticeship Ryan worked along side a number of expert farriers, including a six-month stint in New Zealand, further improving his knowledge, skills and technique. In March 2005 Ryan set up Ryan Batty Farriery, now a Limited company, and in 2011 became an approved training farrier with the Farriers’ Training Agency, which is part of the Farriers’ Registration Council. He is currently working towards becoming an Associate in the Worshipful Company of Farriers.

As the number of horses has increased at Spring Cottage, Ryan brought in David to share the work and between them they keep on top of all our shoeing and hoof management needs.

Equine Dentist

Ben Woodhouse – Equine Dentist

Ben is a category 2 qualified dentist who uses both hand and power tools and he is also a full member of WWAED.

Ben has been our equine dentist since March 2019. Quiet around the horses, he remains calm and patient at all times, giving them confidence and consequently keeping stress to an absolute minimum. The majority of our horses are totally relaxed around him and do not mind having their teeth done!

Each horse will have its teeth checked every six months and with this number of horses Ben visits the yard every month, with two or more rotations on-going.

Vets

Baker, McVeigh & Abbott, Rainbow Equine Hospital

and Yorkshire Equine Practice

We are very lucky in that we have three excellent practices located nearby and they all offer their services 24/7. Depending on the ailment, injury or concern usually depends on which vet we call upon.

Rainbow Equine Hospital is just up the road from us and is the only Equine hospital in the north to offer the combined services of scintigraphy (bone scan), CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at one site with a specialist in diagnostic imaging as part of their hospital team.

We also send horses to Fethard Equine Hospital in County Tipperary, Ireland for specific problems and surgeries.
