Spring Cottage Stables

Spring Cottage Stables dates back well over 200 years and was the home to the famous late William I’Anson, owner and trainer of Blink Bonny who won the 1857 Epsom Derby at 20/1 and Blair Athol who won the Epsom Derby and St Leger in 1864.

Prior to Brian’s purchase in August 2000 trainer William Haigh occupied the yard. William trained from Spring Cottage Stables for 25 years and enjoyed a great deal of success.

There were 25 stables when Brian arrived at the yard. There are now 110 stables.

“We truly cater to what the horses need. Their living situation is a reflection of that”. Brian Ellison

There are traditional stables and American barns and for some of our more quirky Equine residents we have 15 open-air stables. These stables are designed very much like a field shelter, a stable without doors with a small-railed turnout area directly in front. On the ground throughout is a mix of sand and rubber.

Catering To Their Needs

Brian explains: “I put these stables up for horses who might be box-walkers and don’t like being confined to a stable, bleeders or others with respiratory problems, who benefit from being in the open air, or crib-biters who will always find something in a stable to grab and take in air.”

“They can’t do that when they’re housed like this because there are no fitments in the shelter and outside the top rails are all electrified. We’ve had great results and a number of otherwise unhappy individuals are now thriving in their new surroundings.”
