Football: Brian Ellison v David O’Meara

26th March 2107 was not only Mother’s Day, it was the day Brian Ellison’s team managed to keep hold of the Racing Welfare Northern Football Trophy, beating David O'Meara's team 4-3.

The game took place at Malton Community Sports Centre and was a gripping game where most of the goals came in the second half. Our four goals came courtesy of James Killeen, Kevin Stott, Matt Brown – Matt would have been awarded goal of the match if there had been such a prize with a cracking shot that would not have been misplaced in the Xbox game Fifa! And finally, our Captain, David Cottle put the finishing touches on a superb game with a neatly placed shot straight into the back of the net...

Definitly Red & Forest Bihan on Holiday

Definitly Red and Forest Bihan are on holiday following their runs at Aintree last weekend. Both came home fine, not a bother on either of them and they will enjoy the summer out now.

Definitly Red enjoyed no luck in running in the Grand National when, looking to be enjoying the occasion, was badly hampered at Becher's first time around, subsequently putting him out of the race.

Talking to David Carr of the Racing Post, Brian said: "Definitly Red jumped like a buck but the horse fell in front of him and Danny did well to stay on."

Definitly Red: so unlucky in National but lives to fight another day

The day after the Grand National and although it was clearly not what we were hoping for, we are, never the less, pleased Definitly Red, Danny and all the other horses and jockeys came back in one piece.

Well positioned towards the inside, not too far off the leaders and jumping well, Definitly Red was badly hampered at Becher’s Brook (sixth fence) and Danny did a truly amazing job to stay on him and get him pulled up before the ninth fence. His saddle slipped right round, after jinxing to the left as one fell right in front of him, and Danny was forced to jump a couple more fences with no irons before getting Red pulled up. Seriously unlucky. But we live to fight another day...

JAC THE LEGEND: reverts back to hurdles & wins well

It was great to see JAC THE LEGEND back in the winner’s enclosure following success in the Betfred Mobile Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield yesterday.

Reverting back to hurdles and fitted with blinkers following some disappointing runs over fences this year, Kaine Wood (pictured) gave Phil Martins eight-year-old a good ride in the 3m3f event, settled towards the rear of the five-runner field but always in touch, before taking closer order three from home. He battled gamely to take the lead up the run in and stayed on well to score by half a length.

Definitly Red to feature on ITV & BBC - Friday, April 7th, 2017

Definitly Red remains in great form ahead of the Random Health Grand National on Saturday. His regular rider, Andy Robertson, is more than happy with him saying: “He’s really well in himself and feels great. He’s in great form.”

Definitly Red will feature on ITV on Calendar, Tyne Tees and Anglia on Friday evening, April 7th and will also be on ITV Racing: The Opening Show on Saturday morning. If you miss these, the feature will be uploaded to our website this weekend. In addition to the ITV footage, Dave Edwards of BBC Look North caught up with Definitly Red, Andy and Brian yesterday and this footage will also be shown on Friday evening, April 7th on BBC Look North at 6.30pm.

ROYAL FLAG wins Amateur Riders' H'cap on opening w/e of Flat Turf season

The Flat Turf season got underway at Doncaster this weekend and it was great to leave there with a winner courtesy of ROYAL FLAG who was given a great ride by Jonjo O’Neill Junior to take the closing Amateur Riders' Handicap.

Drawn out in stall 18 of 18, he broke well and Jonjo got him in a good position in mid division towards the outside before making ground three out. He stayed on well in the final two furlongs, taking it up with half a furlong to run. He won a shade cosily in the end with the winning margin a length and three-quarters...

Tonto & Dream Walker in great form ahead of Lincoln

The British Flat Turf season gets underway at Doncaster this weekend and we’re looking to have a good few runners on Town Moor during the opening two-day meeting.

We’re double-handed in the valuable Betway Lincoln Handicap on Saturday with two yard favourites in Dream Walker and Top Notch Tonto. They both ran in the Lincoln trial at Wolverhampton earlier this month and both came out of that race well. The pair are in great form and Brian couldn’t be happier with them. Ben Curtis will partner Dream Walker and Ben Robinson will ride Top Notch Tonto...

BORDEAUX BILL wins well at Sedgefield

BORDEAUX BILL took the Betfred TV Novices' Hurdle by 15 lengths at Sedgefield yesterday under a good ride by Henry Brooke.

Only three runners went to post in the 2m4f event and Henry soon had Bordeaux Bill travelling sweetly in behind the leader, Helmsley Lad, before taking it up approaching two from home. He stayed on well to the line and won very easily. A lightly-raced six-year-old by Craigsteel, this was only his third outing for us – he was third in a bumper at Wetherby on debut before winning his first start over hurdles over course and distance the end of January...

So far so good for National bid with Definitly Red

Definitly Red and Danny Cook were the centre of attention on Malton gallops on Friday morning as they schooled over the National-style fences.

We are just two weeks away now, less than two weeks, from the three-day festival at Aintree and National mania has taken hold. The buzz around the yard is increasing, the phone is ringing just a little bit more than usual, and we’ve had more press and camera’s here at Spring Cottage this past week than we’ve had in, well, in a good while! We’re not complaining though!

Danny (Cook) was in to school Red over the Aintree-style fences again on Friday morning, this time with owner Phil Martin and daughter Molly, the ITV cameras and a number of newspaper photographers including York Press, the Yorkshire Post and Daily Mail, all spectating...
